A Life of Art

I wrote my first poem at 5. First song at 6. Learned guitar at 8. Piano at 11. I started rapping at 14. Recording and mixing music at 14. I released my first mixtape at 16. I made my first live performance of my original music at 18. I received my first major record label offer at 19. I performed in my first stadium at 21. I learned to play drums at 23. At 24 I performed in Brandon Amphitheater for the largest crowd since they opened. Today at 27 years old as of February 26, I have released three albums, one EP, 4 mixtapes, and I have a new album on the way. I’ve written over 1,000 songs and recorded over 300 of them. You would never have thought that a young man from Fort Worth, Texas would come to Jackson and accomplish so much in 8 years. But God always does have a knack for doing amazing things in the most unexpected ways, through the least likely people.

  • In 2016 I released my first two albums, “ Like It or Not” and “Time to Change”. I entered multiple music competitions, starting with a Coast to Coast competition in Austin, TX another at The Hideaway in Jackson, and a talent competition at Center Stage in Jackson off E County Line.

The judges of the center stage competition came to me, and said I had something different. I didn’t win, but they wanted to work with me and manage me. Within 3 months, we sent in my music to a major label, and received an offer. They wanted to fly me out, and begin touring.

Even though it would have been a dream come true with lots of money, it was a 360 deal, and they would have owned most of my rights and products. I make music primarily to reach people for Christ and I didn’t want the potential of jeopardizing my mission for money. I politely declined the offer and made the decision to stop pursing labels, and remain independent.

  • In 2017 I began working on my third album. This time I chose to partner with the lead engineer of VU Studios to record my album in an actual studio. Previously I recorded all my albums by myself at home.

During this time I was performing at various locations across Jackson, often in relation to street ministry and youth outreach. I was a regular performer at events on Capital St like TGIF Urban Worship nights at Divine Ministries, and an open mic called The Source JXN at Common Ground Church.

  • I continued to work on my album and perform around the city of Jackson. I also began writing worship songs in addition to my hip-hop and pop records. My most notable performance was at the Jackson Convention Center during a festival of some kind.

  • This year I continued working on my album while leading the worship team at Redirection Church. We wrote about ten worship songs during this time. I was singing, playing keys, and guitar. I would also get invited to lead and minister at other churches and bring our worship team to support me.

  • I launched my full time business with studio recording and production. I released my third album ( “14” ), and I continued performing around Jackson with events like the New Horizon Church Hilltop Party, and performing for their Young Life students. I also began work on my fourth official album.

  • In 2021 I signed with a local Jackson based artist management group, and began booking various performances at local Galas, Parties, and venues. At this time I was also leading worship as a guest at some larger churches around the metro. I also participated in a short tour, opening for a blues singer J-Wonn at a show in Brookhaven, then performing at multiple events in Atlanta. I ended the year by hosting a Night of Worship and Deliverance at my home church, a free event for anyone who wanted to come.

  • In 2022 I parted ways with the management team and began booking my own events, interviews, and performances and I shifted my focus to audio engineering and production.

I continued perfecting my album and even hosted a recording party, inviting followers of my music to join me in my studio as I wrote and recorded references for my new album. I also released my first solo music video for my newest record “Balenciaga”.

My biggest moment that year was singing in the Maverick City Music choir during their show at the Brandon Amphitheater. The show went 4 hours and we kept going through the rain.

  • 2023 was the biggest year for my music career since 2017. Not only did I continue working on my album, I also shifted my focus from engineering back to performing and also leading worship. I began vocal coaching as well as playing drums for different churches when needed.

In October, I performed as the opener for the Go Tell Crusade hosted in the Brandon Amphitheater. That night we had the highest attendance of any crowd since the venue opened, and over 2,000 young people chose to follow Christ.

  • I began 2024 by performing in the Jackson Indie Music Fest, catching everyone by surprise. No one expected me to be a rapper, much less be any good. I participated in their media interview tour, then returned to working on my new album.

Near the beginning of the summer, I shifted my focus to preparation for my mayoral campaign. I set aside my album which was finished being recorded, so I could focus on the campaign trail.

Art Matters

My passion as a music artist has led me to some amazing places. I believe that art and creativity are a huge part of culture that is necessary in any thriving community. It allows us to appreciate the beauty and the pain of our circumstance. It unlocks new perspectives, and gives our emotions the often illusive articulation we so badly need in life. It gives us a way to share our messages, in ways that carry less consequence and more freedom. My music and my art are one of the most valuable contributions I have made to our city. Bringing a positive message to our community, especially the youth. Music has been my most effective outreach tool, and it’s a tool that can touch anyone, anywhere.
